What is le bisou?

The word le bisou is the most common term for “kiss” in casual French. It’s often used to describe cute and affectionate kisses with close friends, family members, or romantic partners.

• Gros bisous! 

Love you, XOXO! (lit. “Big kisses!”) 

• Un petit bisou?

(How about) a little kiss?

This word is perfect for showing warmth and friendliness. It’s commonly used in everyday French, so if you’re sending a text to your special someone or a close friend, don’t hesitate to add un petit bisou at the end!

What is la bise?

If you’ve ever watched French people greet each other, you’ve likely seen them do la bise, which is the French word for the air kisses exchanged on each other’s cheeks as a form of greeting. It’s more of a social custom than a sign of affection.

Shall we do the cheek kiss?

• Une bise pour dire au revoir ! 

A kiss to say goodbye!

Fun facts: 

• The number of la bise depends on the region—some places do two, while others do three or even four! 
• Men usually don’t do la bise as much.
• La bise is more for family, close friends, and teenagers. Adults and newer acquaintances often skip it, even if they use the informal tu.

What is le baiser?

Here’s where things get a little tricky! Le baiser refers to a romantic, passionate kiss—like the kind you might see in a movie. It’s more intense than le bisou and la bise.

• Il lui a donné un baiser tendre. 

He gave her a tender kiss.

• Le film se termine par un baiser passionné. 

The movie ends with a passionate kiss.

Note: Be careful with baiser!

• In modern French, le baiser is not as commonly used in everyday speech. However, you may still encounter it in literature or more formal contexts.
• While baiser as a noun means “a kiss”, its verb form refers to having sex, which has a completely different (and very adult!) meaning.
• Using baiser can lead to misunderstandings if not used carefully, given its two distinct meanings.

When to Use Which Word?

1. Use le bisou when you want to show affection. It’s the safest option for most situations! 

• Fais-moi un bisou avant de dormir.  

Give me a kiss before sleep.

2. Use la bise when you’re greeting someone with a cheek kiss.

• Je t’envoie mes plus grosses bises !

Sending you my biggest kisses!

3. Use the noun le baiser if you’re talking about a romantic, passionate kiss—but remember the word’s other meaning!

• L’amoureux désirait donner un baiser à sa bien-aimée.  

The lover wished to give his beloved a kiss.
