Learning a new language is not an easy task, especially when juggling a busy schedule and various daily responsibilities. Chad, a college student majoring in General Linguistics, had been learning German on his own for a while but hadn’t seen much progress. Luckily, he came across the FluenDay app. Chad shared his learning story with FluenDay, focusing on his challenges, progress, and the achievements he ultimately made.

First meet with FluenDay

Chad first encountered FluenDay on YouTube. “I was browsing YouTube Shorts one day when I came across an interesting video comparing a scene in German and English,” he recalls. Intrigued, he went to the App Store and downloaded the app.

Initially, he was impressed with the clear and easy-to-navigate user interface, which encouraged him to start learning. As he continued using the app, he found that learning from clips was actually effective. “I was able to learn useful German from those clips, which is more helpful than traditional books,” Chad noted.

Daily Life with FluenDay

Chad set a personal goal to learn German with FluenDay every day. Due to his busy schedule, he selected the “Casual Course” so he could fit in lessons during breaks. He credits his consistent learning to FluenDay’s widget, which helps him stay on track. “Every time I see my phone screen, the mascot reminds me to finish today’s lesson,” Chad explains. “I also enjoy seeing the different styles of the app’s mascot, which keeps me motivated to continue learning and see how it changes.”

Chad shared a memorable learning episode with us:

A couple of weeks ago, while on his way home, he used Fluenday to start the “you’re welcome” clips session. He encountered the expression “Bitte schön,” along with others he hadn’t heard before, such as “Gern geschehen,” “Nichts zu danken,” “mit Vergnügen.” After watching these clips several times, he felt he had a basic grasp of the phrases. However, he wondered why “Bitte schön” meant “you’re welcome,” since he remembered “bitte” meant “please” and “schön” meant “pretty”.

Chad did some research and found that many people also had the same question. Therefore, he conducted a frequency search of these phrases in the DWDS online corpus and visualized the results. “Bitte schön” emerged as the most commonly used phrase, making it the preferred choice.

“Thanks to FluenDay, I was able to  clearly remember this intriguing German expression.” The app’s clips helped him understand how the phrase is used in daily life, making the learning process both engaging and effective.

Results & Achievements

Chad has now reached a 48-day streak with FluenDay, and his enthusiasm for learning German continues to grow. This consistent progress has sparked a new ambition: to study abroad in Germany later in his studies. Chad is excited about the prospect of immersing himself in the language and culture firsthand, believing that this experience will further enhance his language skills and deepen his understanding of German. His journey with FluenDay has not only helped him make significant strides in his language learning but has also inspired him to pursue new and exciting opportunities.
